Urinary infections and catheters

Does anyone know why you are more prone to infections if you have an indwelling catheter? I am female, and 46.
I have a supra-pubic catheter as a result of retention problems. I used to have problems with infection every now and then even before bladder problems led to insertion of catheter, but since then I am getting infections every 3-4 weeks.
