Hysterectomy incision not healing

by Healingdoubt, Jun 21, 2008 07:06PM
I had an abdominal hysterectomy 8 days ago. The stables were removed 5 days later but due to fluid build up, the surgeon recommended wet to dry dressing twice a day. The incision is now partially open ,approx 7 cm long, 3 cm deep and 1 1/2 cm wide.  Is there a less painfull method of healing than packing it twice a day?

Hysterectomy wounds can sometimes separate superficially, like yours did. If this happens in my patients, I generally go to once daily wet to dry dressing changes, but some surgeons prefer twice daily changes. The wound slowly heals from the bottom up.  Depending on your skin type, the healed scar may be slightly larger (wider) than if your incision healed without the dressing changes.

Thank you very much for your response. It certainly makes me feel better the right approach is being done.
