Heart palpitations

by Salesman, Jun 23, 2008 11:44AM
Dear Sir/Madame
I have been a runner for years. In Dec. 07 I was training pretty heard when I had palpitations that wouldnt stop, no dizzyness or pain. They stopped when I stopped. I went to the cardiologist, a stress test came back negative, and a 24 monitor was unremarkable except for a very low heart rate ( in the 40s). He said because Im a marathoner that is normal. I gave up running and started doing Tae Kwon Do. I still had them so I gave up all caffine products. I am extremely stressed and worrie alot. Just today a had an episode where I feel like Im having a palpitation but my head goes fast for about 7 - 10 sec. and them goes back to normal. This is the 3rd time I have had this. Is this stress related? PS I wore a holter for a month with no episodes. Kind of like your car will behave fine in front of a mechanic.

The only known temporary cure for palpitations is a Holter monitor.  I'm kidding but it sure seems that way.

I am a runner who developed palpitations and then SVT a couple of years ago.  For some reason - and my EP confirmed this -  there is a correlation between low heart rates and the development of arrhythmias.  I have a structurally normal heart (echocardiogram) and was given the go-ahead to continue running.  It has been physically challenging but I've kept at it with some days better than others.

Stress does not cause this condition but if you have it, stress will make it worse.

Arrhythmias aren't fun but most are benign.  You need to get this confirmed and that will probably bring you peace of mind (better than any drugs IMO).
