Possible Colectomy?

by twinsmomplus2more, Jun 23, 2008 05:50PM
My 14 year old daughter was recently diagnosed with Colonic Dysfunctioning.  It was found that the left side of her colon does not work at all.  She has had severe constipation all her life.   She now has an appendicostomy to irrigate her colon daily.  Her doctor said that he could remove the dysfunctional part of her colon and reconnect it to the functioning parts, but there is only a 50% chance that it would be successful.  He said that 50% of the kids that undergo this surgery need to continue to irrigate daily.  She may be in the same place after the surgery as before, except that she has gone through this major surgery. He also mentioned the possibility of a temporary colostomy.  My question is, have you heard of better odds?  Do you know how successful this surgery can be?  Can she live a normal life?  Thank you.
