kidney reflux

Hi my 2 year old daughter was diagnosed with kidney reflux. she is a grade 3. They have put her on an antibiotic for the time being. The urologist and my doc are saying that we need to have her potty trained because sometimes holding her bladder can cause the the reflux. they found it becuse she had a bladder infection so they got a VCUG done on her. I know that she held her bladder during her infection because it hurt her to go potty. but never beofre..she pees like a race horse. She is not interested in potty training at all. Do you think it could really help? I had the same thing and had surgery when i was 3 and my dad had surgery as well so it obviously runs in the family. They said that they want to wait to see if she will out grow it, because they do not want to do surgery unless it is neccessary. I have read up on it and says the average age of outgrowing the reflux is 6-7. so does this mean for the next 5 years my daughter will have to keep undergoing these tests and taking an antibiotic? Givin our history i would say go ahead with the surgery and do it while she is young, I would rather it be done young then 5 years down the road while she is older and will remember it more. What do you think? Also I have 2 other daughters ages 5 and 8 months, do u suggest that i have them tested as well?? thank you so much for your time!

I too had reflux as a child.  I never ever had bladder infections, I just held my bladder all day and refused to use the public washroom at school.  At 21 I had to have my right kidney removed because it was so scarred and damaged.  I hope this gets fixed for your daughter sooner rather than later. My remaining kidney is scarred as well, but no where near the extent of my other one was.  I spent YEARS with specialists trying to find out what was wrong.  I spent months and months in the hospital with massive amounts of blood coming from the kidney and they could not figure out why.  It was only AFTER they removed it that they found out how horrifically it was scarred and then asked me about holding my bladder as a child and put two and two together.
