anyone have experience with stroke and CP?

by lrlewis, Jun 25, 2008 12:40AM
my brother, who is 38 and has cerebral palsy, had a stroke 5 days ago (hyptertensive pontine hemorrage-at the base of the brainstem).  it affected his left side mostly (the side already affected by the CP).  he has since regained sight in his left eye, pins and needles feeling on much of his left side, and can move his left arm some.  his speech was initially really hard to follow but has improved significantly (though it is still not completely clear).  the speech and physical therapists were positive about the likelihood that he would regain his previous capacities.  he seemed to be inproving so quickly the first couple of days, but now we're alarmed to realize that he can't really feel his torso, thus can't stand; can't yet feed himself, can't even feel to pee.  we're trying to get a sense of how long we can expect it to take for these things to return/improve.  does anybody have any experience with stroke recovery for an indivdiual with CP?  also, he is extremely emotional (reiterating his thanks and love for days, to all family and friends who are around him.  usually he's a wry, witty, cynical, joking person but now he's very sentimental and begins to cry frequently.)  we don't know whether this is the result of the impact the experience has had on him (i.e., his perspective has changed; he realizes how much he loves and is loved by others), or whether it is some kind of side effect of the meds or the stroke itself.  anybody experience such a thing with a stroke survivor?

thanks for any help.
