Elevated heart rate after exercise, is migraine the cause?

by elaine216, Jun 25, 2008 12:02PM
Hi,

I have recently been diagnosed with Migraine with Aura, I have had severe migraine from early childhood, however in the last two years I developed more symptoms such as blurred/double/jumping vision, hearing fluctuation, loss of balance, pressure in ears, tinnitus, dizziness and wobbling. I have been prescribed amitriptyline for migraine prevention which seems to help a little bit but I still have the symptoms every day. My life came to a standstill during the last two years. I used to be very active, going to gym, cycling to work, and I stopped all physical activity during this time. Recently after feeling a little bit better from taking the prevention medication, I started to exercise again, however I have noticed some problems with my heart rate. Using the machines in the gym and a cross trainer/exercise bike at home, my heart rate during exercise struggles to rise above 120, but after I stop exercising it begins to rise and does not reduce at all during the supposed recovery period of 1-2 minutes. The last day I went to the gym after 10 minutes on running machine followed by ten minutes on tread climber my pulse was around 112 during the exercise and as soon as I stopped it went up to 176. I feel dizzy after I have used the machines, and sometimes feel like I am floating. I am so used to these feelings now after having this condition for a couple of years that initially I thought nothing of it. After reading up on increased heart rate after exercise I am a little concerned about my heart rate, is this increase in heart rate after exercise dangerous? I also have some very strong palpitations at times.

Could my miraine with aura be coming from a problem with my heart or could it be causing a problem for my heart?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Dear,
Elevated heart rate fast, pounding, or uneven heart rate, chest pain sweating, general ill feeling are side effects of amitriptyline .You should consult your physician regarding these.
Do not stop using amitriptyline without first talking to your doctor. You may need to use less and less before you stop the medication completely. Stopping this medication suddenly could cause you to have unpleasant side effects. It may take up to 4 weeks of using this medicine before your symptoms improve.
