11cm complex, septated cyst 20 weeks pregnant

by JosieHock, Jun 25, 2008 01:39PM
Hi there - I am 20 weeks pregnant and an 11cm cyst was found on my left ovary at my 11 week scan, and was still present and unchanged at 19 weeks.  The report said it appears to be a complex cyst with septations with normal ovarian tissue on the side.  My OBGYN is repeating the u/s in one week, and has sent me for CA125.  I have a history of simple cysts that have always dissolved on their own.  Never this size though, and never complex.  I am terrified that this is a malignant process.  I am comfortable with my Dr's course of action, but am looking for some answers on the likelihood of this being malignant.  Thank you in advance.

Hi There, most cysts are benign and that is especially true in pregnancy. (0.11/1000 deliveries)
Most are funny ovarian cysts related to the stimulation of pregnancy hormones. Some are benign tumors, and rarely a cancer.
It sounds like your doctor is doing a great job checking you.
Many obstetricians would recommend removing an 11 cm cyst in pregnancy because it can twist and sometimes cause irritation to the pregnancy.
best wishes
