Sudden Heavy Bleeding

I recently had an experience where I was sitting at work and felt wet. I had started to bleed, a lot and had soaked through my clothes. The bleeding was over within minutes. I was not on my period, not pregnant and never have been, and I'm on the Nuvaring.
I've made an appointment with doctor, but it's not for almost a month. My doctor said she didn't want to speculate on the problem, but I'm dying to know what could cause this. Any ideas?
