Possible MG?

by syris, Jun 26, 2008 12:43AM
I am a 27 year old male I saw my doctor a few years ago because I had been hoping to shed some light on why I would get shaking in my hands and muscles. I then spent time having different blood tests to rule out some of the more common neurological diseases and never had any results that could give a diagnosis. I have also had a couple of MRI's with one being a cervical MRI all of which showed nothing abnormal. I have now begin to wonder if I could have Myathensia Gravis though my neurologist never mentioned anything about it I started to wonder if because he was an older doctor he may not be as familiar with it.  My symptoms are that I seem to be very tired at the end of the day even when I haven't done anything that would make me tired. My muscles will all shake when used, my arms and legs are affected, even my jaw.I went to the dentist the other day and can't even make it halfway through a teeth cleaning appointment without my jaw shaking because I struggle to keep it open.  I walk fine, but when I lift objects or stretch out my legs and hold them out they start shaking. Also for years I have had family occasionally ask what is wrong with my left eye because it would be somewhat droopy.

Does this sound like it could be MG? and if so do most doctors have the means to test for it or is it something you have to see a specialist for.

Thanks

Hello Dear,
Your symptoms relate to myasthenia gravis.

Because weakness is a common symptom of many other disorders, the diagnosis is often missed in people who experience mild weakness or in those individuals whose weakness is restricted to only a few muscles.
A special blood test can detect the presence of immune molecules or acetylcholine receptor antibodies. Most patients with myasthenia gravis have abnormally elevated levels of these antibodies. However, antibodies may not be detected in patients with only ocular forms of the disease.
Another test is called the edrophonium test. This test records weakening muscle responses when the nerves are repetitively stimulated.
You should consult an expert neurologist and get these tests done to diagnose the disease.
