High Heart Rate

by MYJC, Jun 26, 2008 02:15PM
I'm a 23-year old male, around 1655-170 lbs. Joined the gym about 6 months ago and run very regularly, I also do weights. I usually run/jog 3-4 miles, about 3-4 times a week.

My heart rate (resting and exercise) seems high. When I run my heart rate gets up to 180-190 before I feel a need to stop. As far as resting heart rate, the machines usually give me something around 90 but it's possible that it's anxiety since I tend to be a little stressed and exitable when I'm at the gym. My heart rate returns to normal fairly quickly after I stop.

I haven't seen a doctor in quite a while but I have no history of cardiovascular disease. Don't know what my bp is.

Am I just out of shape or is it something to be concerned about?

Hi,

I feel it is a little high for your age as the resting heart rate is normally between 50-80 beats/min. Target heart rate for your age during vigorous activities like running and jogging is 98-166 beats/min.
I would suggest you to lose a little weight and also bring this up during your next annual health exam. http://www.americanheart.org/presenter.jhtml?identifier=4736
