adnormal periods

I am 38 years old and last month my period was 9 days late. I took a home pregnancy test and it came back negative. When I did finally start it only lasted 2 days and it was considerably light bleeding compared to what I'm use to. Being late is odd enough considering I'm ALWAYS on time if not early and they last anywhere from 6-8 days. My question is, since I don't know when to expect my next one, could this be pre-menopausal? I would rather find out it was a false negative than to find out I'm hitting menopause. I've been regular since I first started 25 years ago. The only time I've ever been late is when I was pregnant 13 years ago. Since the birth of my child I have a fairly heavy flow for the duration of my period. It doesn't start off light, then heavy for a couple days before tapering off the last few days. It's heavy the entire 6-8 days. Should I be worried and what point should I consult my physician?
