stubborn husband

by partime, Jun 27, 2008 05:55AM
my husband has a stone somewhere in his duct stuck. They found it on a catscan. HE has only one kidney, and is in alot of pain. Can this cause damage to his kidney if not removed, and can he pass this on his own like he thinks he can?

Hi,

A renal stone in excess of 5 mm will usually not pass on its own.
A smaller stone can pass but with concerted effort involving hydration and diuretics.

As he has only one kidney, it would be risky to take a chance that can impair the function of this one.

A stone obstructing the ureters can cause hydronephrosis and destroy the nephrons in the kidney, limiting kidney function.

A partial blockage can result in collection of urine and recurrent urinary tract infections.

It would be best to consider conservative or interventional management based on the size of the stone he has.

Do keep us posted on your doubts.
Regards
