Oral Thrush and Leukoplakia?

by AGGG, Jun 27, 2008 12:17PM
In February I received heavy antibiotics for a wisdom tooth infection, then I woke up one day during the treatment (after the infection was gone, but I followd the instructions on the bottle to "take until finished") and my mouth was covered in a white film. The next day I went to my doctor and he told me I had thrush and prescribed me troches for it. Well, the thrush went away mostly, and ever since then Ive have a light covering of thrush on my tongue and I am taking acidophilus to try and recultivate the "good" bacteria in my mouth and it has only been a few days but I think it is working. But, now since the thrush is going away, I noticed that there are two lateraly white lines on the sides of my tongue. I just found out about leukoplakia and how it is prevelant in people in late stages of HIV and I am scared this is it. I know that I did not have this when I went to the doctor the day of starting my antibiotic treatment. Could I have gotten this from the constant irritation of the thrush that I have had in my mouth for months? Or could there something worse happening to me?

First, you should see your physician or an infectious disease specialist and request that you been screened and tested for sexually transmitted diseases if it may be possible that you contracted one.

The doctor may want to consider prescribing Nystatin suspension 100,000u per 5 cc and an additional 10 days to see if that clear up the lesions. You should have your tongue evaluated and possibly biopsied for any lesion that persists after two weeks.
