Do I really have Paroxysmal Tachycardia

by gorgo, Jun 27, 2008 01:13PM
WAs rushed to hospital for  something that was considered an anxiety attack.  My heart rate was up to 170 bpm.  EKG was negative chest xray negative, blood tests negative.  sent to a cardiologist. had ecchocardiogram and halter monitor.  he told me the holter monitor picked up a very benign case of paroxysmal tachycardia and it aws nothing to worry about.  He said  that I should take toprol for three months and then just take myself off it.  i will be attending college in a different state.  and he said he is sure the problem will clear up once I'm there.  Is it possible that it was just an anxiety attack?  Is it okay to take yourself off of toprol 25 milligrams?

If you have paroxysmal tachycardia, the toprol may help with it but there is a chance it might recur when you come off it.  Not a good idea given that you'll be starting a college semester in case this recurs.  Have you ever had these symptoms before?  How are you tolerating the toprol?  These tachycardias do recur and it may be that you are at a period when it will become more frequent.  also, since you are probably in you late teens, early twenties, it might not be a good idea for you to be on medications to control this in case it becomes more frequent.  If the tachycardia becomes more frequent I would suggest that you be seen by a cardiac electrophysiologist to find out what this tachycardia really is.  Certain forms of these tachycardias are curable with simple procedures obviating the need for oral medication therapy altogether.  Of course, anxiety can also cause your heart rate to increase to as high as it did.  In that situation, the tachycardia is secondary to the anxiety and treating the anxiety should help with the tachycardia.

Doctor told me it will not reoccur, if it did keep happening he as going to refer me to a pscyhiatrist.  That is why I was wondering if I really had this condition. I am 24, going to grad school in Texas.

Did your doctor tell you why he was so confident that it would not reoccur? I had a-tach and one of the tests they did was a stress test. I was put on toprol until I had an ablation. I was in my early 30's when my a-tach was discovered.

Good luck.

hi paceman!
I was diagnosed with a Paroxysmal Supraventricular Tachycardia last february (225bpm) and up until now, it has not reoccured..(I am very grateful to God about it, since the episode was so scary). Though, I have palpitations at times and an extra hard heartbeat (as if i am hit with a bolt of lightning) 5 to 10 times a day but there are also days when i don't feel them and i feel perfectly all right. Have you felt these before you had an ablation? how are you feeling now after the ablation?what were your symptoms of tachy before the ablation?
I am really scared paceman, scared to death even until now..i am not considering ablation since my doc told me i don't need it because of the frequency of the episode.  he said what i have right now are just palpitations.
I have stopped taking rythmonorm.  is it safe? because i find it uncomforting, heartwise, if i take anything.
is it possible to get rid of svt without medication or ablation? i want to sound optimistic. i am praying really so hard. asking HIM to spare me and even others who feel the same way i do.
please answer me,:-)
Thank you so much for your time.
