epdidimys

by mysterious629, Jun 27, 2008 03:51PM
For a month and a half i have had this dull ache mostly in my left testicle. I WENT TO THE HOSPITAL and doctor said i had epididimytis. They did a urine sample and said it was clean. Furthermore, they prescribed this medication called doxycycline. I took it for 10 days and was fine. I took a hot bath on the last day and ejaculated. 10 minutes later my testicles were aching. Few daysa after, pain came back sporadically in intervals. Other symptoms began such as  pain in the bottom abdomen, constipation, burping, and tightness in my lovehandles. Went back to the hospital got an ultrasound and said it was hydroceles. I went to urologist and he said it wasnt. He pinpointed the pain and said it was inflammation of epididmys or a cyst. He said to let it heal by itself. Will there be major problems in the future? can i still mastubate? Is he correct?

Hi,

Epidydimitis is an inflammation of the epidydimis which can occur in response to an infection or trauma that may have irritated the epidydimis.

As you have already completed a course of antibiotics, and your urinalysis being negative for bacteria, it would be best to follow your urologist's advice.

Epidydimis is part of the structure that delivers the sperms produced in the testes to the prostate.

Masturbation should not cause any problem if it is in a frequency (3-4 times/ week) that will not irritate the involved structures.

Sitting in a hot bath for 10-15 min twice daily can provide pain relief and aid the healing process.
Do keep us posted on your doubts and progress.

Thank You for replying.

I WANT TO KNOW WHAT KIND OF TRAUMA COULD HAVE AFFECTED THE EPIDYDIMIS. Furthermore, every time i urinate, after ejaculating, i get this slight burning yet stinging sensation on the tip of my penis. Is this due to the inflamed structure?

Thanks

P.S. How long does this take to heal?

Hi,

"The exact pathophysiology of acute epididymitis is unclear; however, it is believed to be caused by the retrograde passage of infected urine from the prostatic urethra to the epididymis via the ejaculatory ducts and vas deferens. Obstruction of the prostate or urethra and congenital anomalies create a predisposition for sterile or urethrovasal reflux. Normally, the oblique angle of the ejaculatory ducts through the dense prostatic tissue prevents reflux"
Reflux may also be induced by Valsalva or strenuous exertion. Epididymitis is commonly found to develop during strenuous exertion in conjunction with a full bladder.

"Instrumentation and indwelling catheters are common risk factors for acute epididymitis. Epididymitis may also be accompanied by urethritis or prostatitis. Tuberculous epididymitis may be the presenting feature of genitourinary tuberculosis (TB), which develops via hematogenous spread. Other bloodstream infections may seed the scrotum, especially in children."

"Trauma to the scrotum can be a precipitating event."

"# In addition to antibiotics (except in viral epididymitis), the mainstays of supportive therapy for acute epididymitis and orchitis are as follows:
#

    * Reduction in physical activity
    * Scrotal support and elevation
    * Ice packs
    * Anti-inflammatory agents
    * Analgesics, including nerve blocks
    * Avoidance of urethral instrumentation
    * Sitz baths"
www.emedicine.com/med/topic704.htm
"In the typical infectious case, it will take two to three days for you to notice improvement. If the redness does not subside and you do not start to feel better by that time, contact your physician. Complete resolution of symptoms will take longer. Discomfort can persist until the entire course of antibiotics is completed, and the firmness and swelling can takes months to resolve."

Any blow to the scrotum, strenuous activity, compression of the testes can be considered trauma to the testes and epididymis.

Hi,

After ejacualting, I had to urinate but i had this burning and stinging sensation near the tip of the penis. Is this due to the inflamed epididymis?

Hi,

It is likely that the pain is due to the epididymitis.

You will have to check whether the symptoms have resolved completely, at least 4 weeks after you completed the course of doxycycline.

It is possible that the doxycycline has helped cure the infection, but the inflammation is taking time to resolve.

If you still have these symptoms persisting after a month, it may be likely that there is an infection despite the doxycycline, and you may need another course of antibiotics to clear the infection.

Meanwhile, keep flluid intake over 2000 ml, increase intake of vitamin C-rich foods, and ensure you take care not to irritate the epididymis further.
Sit on well-padded surfaces and avoid sitting for prolonged periods of time.

hi,

this is not about the epididymis,

Today i had dinner and plaid outside afterwards. Silly me, i didnt digest my food so i had cramps. I had to go to the washroom so i went to Mcdonalds fast food restaurant. I went into the washroom and the seat was a bit dirty but i couldnt hold it in. Could i have got an STD or a serious disease?

Please let me know as soon as possible

Hi,

Men usually do not contract any STDs or UTIs from dirty toilet seats.
This is because their urethra is much longer than women and infection does not ascend very successfully plus the fact that there is not as much exposure of mucous membranes as in women.

Do not worry about contracting an infection from there.
Just keep you fluid intake high and go on vitamin C and A for about 2 weeks as these help strengthen the mucosa against injuries and infection.
