Atypical Trigeminal Pain and optic neuropathy

by Ang7, Jun 27, 2008 04:32PM
I am 55 years old and was diagnosed with "ANA-negative" SLE approximately 10 years ago. My symptoms included sun-induced arthralgias, severe weight loss and very low complement levels. My ANA has remained negative and my C3 and C4 has been in the normal range for the past 5 years. I have been on prednisone 5mg for many years now. 1 year ago I developted a relatively small paracentral area of visual loss and was told I had R optic neuropathy. A few months ago, I developed a moderate discomfort in the area of the R mandiblular nerve. The pain occurs in my lower jaw and just into the ear canal. It lasts a few minutes and is more of a pulling, squeezing sensation. Sometimes I feel numbness by my lip. There are no trigger points, but the pain always occurs with exercise, though it does happen at rest intermittently. I had a coronary CTA which was negative. They gave me Nitro during the procedure, which caused severe lancing pain in the same area. MRI is negative. Treadmill and echo negative. Labs normal. I did have a dental crown put in last fall but the dentist says this is not related. Over the past few weeks, I have been getting symptoms over the R maxillary area. The doctors don't know what it is and I feel like I am going crazy. Help!
