7 weeks?? No heart beat, should I get a second opinion?

by Joey1977, Jun 27, 2008 08:59PM
We saw a doctor 2 1/2 weeks ago (5/10) from feeling around he said that we were between 4-5 weeks
based on the first day of the LPM being 5/6/08. Today we got an ultrasound and afterwards the tech told us to leave and that the doctor would call us in 10 minutes. We knew something was wrong, but didn't know what. After 2 hours of waiting for a call, we called the tech again. She apologized for the doctor not calling back. She said that "she's not supposed to do this, but she feels bad that the doctor didn't get back to us". She said that the baby was only 5 weeks and 3 days developed and that there is no heartbeat, so the baby is dead. We talked to the doctor afterwards and she said that she is on call and would only see us if she is bleeding and it is an emergency. She said that we could wait a few weeks for nature to take its course and reject the fetus or we could get a D&C. Nothing about this feels right, she still has all of the syptoms of being pregnant, nausea, headache, sore breasts. Is my baby dead? Should I get a second opinion or am I holding on to false hope?? I don't want to put my girl through anymore than necessary!! Please help!

you definalty need to get a second opinion, it is very very common not to see the heartbeat at that point. some women take up to 8 or 9 weeks. Defianlty don't do anything like a d&c yet.she may have ovualted later and therefore the baby wouldn't be as developed. I wish you all the best.

I wouldn't do anything yet either.....I was in a similar postition at 9 weeks in Dec. and had Hcg levels drawn....they did drop, so I went ahead with a D&C, but I needed that lab work done to be 100% sure before going ahead with the D&C.

I had a scan at 5 weeks as i m/c 2 years ago, my 5 week scan showed an empty gestational sack so i was told to come back in 10 days as she didnt think it was a viable pregnancy,i went back yesterday and the baby and heart beat was there. Also when i was pregnant with my daughter 6 years ago i was bleeding at 7 weeks so i had a scan, the sonographer said there was no heart beat and as i was bleeding they said i was misscarrying, she said the heart should have started beating at 6 weeks.Well i bled alot at home and my partner said we must have faith but i had already been told that i had lost the baby. A week later we had another scan to make sure it had all come away and i could not believe my eyes when we saw a strong heart beat ,we called our daughter faith for this very reason. It just goes to show they sometimes get it wrong and every pregnancy is different,GOOD LUCK X X X

What about the fact that they thought the fetus should be 7 weeks 3 days and it was only showing 5 weeks 3 days? How accurate are they when they come up with the timeline in the beginning??

She could have ovulated later than she thought, so they baby wouldn't be as far along as first thought.   Get her HCG levels tested, get a second opinion, have another ultra sound.  I have heard of a lot of people on here who were wrongly diagnosed with a m/c.  Just make sure you are 100% sure before you do anything.  Good Luck!

maybe the doctor was wrong 2 weeks ago and maybe you were only 3 weeks along.  how long are your period cycles usually?

oh am really sorry ...you know what ..you guys should wait another week or so or get an HCG level test just to make sure the numbers are within the normal ranges ,,,,the thing is some people dont hear or see the heartbeat until 8-9 weeks ,i would encourage you to change the doctor asap they should send you for blood work... and i dont think the D&C is a good idea until you get some blood work done!! wish you the best of luck

When I got my first u/s I was told the baby was 6 weeks 6 days.  Exactly two weeks later I was told the baby was 9 weeks 3 days (4 days bigger) again exactly two weeks later I was told the baby was 12 weeks ( another 4 days bigger --8days total)  If she just has a slower growing baby or you were off in the first place, the baby could just be behind a bit and at that point, you wouldnt be able to see the h/b.  I would give it about 10 days and try again.  You will see growth at least if it is ok and should be able to see the h/b at that point.  Good Luck.
