My husband has been diagnosed with a Fusiform Aneurysm on his Thalamas, the neurosurgeon has told us that he will be treating it with coiling.  I am a bit confused as I have read that coiling blocks the blood flow, and the location of his aneurysm is a main artery.   I was also wondering about the risks of this procedure in the Thalamas as I have read that this is a critical part of the brain

Hello Dear,

Fusiform Aneurysm  are acceptably treated with stent placement or stent-assisted coiling, and the patency could be preserved at follow-up. However, the efficiency of stent placement alone for intracranial vertebral artery dissecting aneurysm is limited. Stent-assisted coil embolization or double stent placements are a viable alternative for complete occlusion of dissecting aneurysms. The side effets are very rare.
