DAY 4 SUBUTEX. REALLY SICK FROM IT!!

by ladyboop, Jun 28, 2008 10:52AM
Yesterday was day 3 on Subutex. I was so sick with a migrain headache and so sick to my stomache I had to take some reglan. I slept most of the day, and all of the night.. From 6:30pm to 8:30a.m. I cut my dose back yesterday from 16mgs to 6mgs.. I have had 2mgs today. I have alittle headache and am feeling dissy!  my stomache is still not right. I talk to the nurse yesterday, She said maybe its w/d's and you need more subutex. I said no way! I think I am getting to much.  The first 24 hours I had about 11mgs. From 10.00am one day to 7:00a.m the next. I was feeling good. So I think I am taking to much. I was planning to take 6mgs today in total. But I am not sure I can tolarate it.. Has anyone else had this trouble with this med? I am starting to think I will not be able to take it. I do not do well on alot of different meds. I have had this trouble all my life. That is how I got on the pain pills to begin with.. Cause I cold not take anything else, without getting real sick from side effects...  Any input on this, I would be greatful for.....

   Thanks,

Hey Lady.
When I got on Suboxone on Feb 20, 08, I had the same problem for about 3days.  I finally found that I was taking too much.  I had to build up to the proper dose.  The doctor just said, "start out with 4mg until you feel better".  My addictive thinking was, "if he says 4mg, then I need 6mg"  So the first day I took 6mg right off the bat and another 2mg within two hours.  I was vomitting in about 4 hours, felt horrible the 2nd day and by the 3rd day, I was better.
It just takes time for our bodies to get used to something new.  Today is great.  I'm productive, I can go to work every day and not think about which "med check" I'm going to go to so I can get more meds.  I don't make the never ending phone calls to try and get pills.  I don't have to lie about big gaps of time missing.  I can play with my kids and not feel pain in my body.
Eventually I will have to get off of the Suboxone, but it's not today.  I can only live in today.  And today......it's a good day.
Good luck!!

I know sub can give you headaches but I think you cut your dose too much too quick and you are having w/d's. I wouldn't take the dose up too much but the cut was too quick. I would try 10 or 12 mg. You body will adjust to the Subutex and you won't be feeling so bad. I think it's more getting off the opiate than going on the Sub. You could be getting a rebound headache if you were taking something with tylenol in it and it may not be the Sub at all. 3 days off opiates isn't long and you don't feel perfect while taking sub, it just helps with w/d's, you won't feel the same as you did on the opiate. You have to give yourself time to adjust to not having that opiate in your body anymore but I think you cut too low too quick. Rule of thumb says 8mg of sub takes about 30 days to wean down and off of. So you see why I think you cut down to fast and you're in w/d. I was sick like you are too when I first started sub but once I got used to it after about a week, I was back out and about. My first week I was sick and home in bed but that is par for the course when quitting opiate drugs.
Hang in there, stay on the sub as your doc recommends, and try to take the dose up around 12 mg. In a few days, you'll feel a lot better. Keep us posted!

What you are saying make no sence to me what so ever. What the heck is the point of going on Sub, if you are going to be so sick for a week, You mightas well go cold turkey!! I was never sick like this on methadone! If this is what I have to look forward to the next 3 or 4 days. Then I will say the hell with it. Just taper the dose down everyday until I am off of it.. I would think you would have to be on it awhile before being addicted to the sub... I have never had any rebound headaches from coming off of pain pills before. Do not know why i would start now. I believe the headaches are from the sub. Everytime I take a dose, the headache get worse. I did not wake up with a headache. It was better. I had not taken any sub since 1:45 p.m yesterday. After taken a morning dose, the headache has started to come back. It is not to bad right now. But have a feeling when I take the afternoon dose, I will be in big trouble. I only plan to take 6mgs today... Day 1, I had 7mgs, day 2, I had 16mgs, day 3, was the day I started having trouble, could not even get out of bed, the headache got so bad. I only took 6mgs yesterday. I plan to do the same for today. I think at this point, I would rather feel w/d's than to be sick like this... You know what I mean... I can not get hold of the Dr. There is no service at the office. I plan to let them know about this monday. You spend this kind of money for help. Then you can not reach someone for help when you need it. That is unsat, as far as I am concerned!!

I just started Subutex yesterday, and perhaps your dosage is a bit strong.  My DO suggested taking 2.5 mgs (she has a pharmacy make 10mg lozenges that can easily be split into quarters) and if I don't feel better, then take another 2.5.   That seems to make more sense, as opposed to taking to much and having to cut down.

You make a good point when you say, "Why take the subs in the first place if I'm going to feel this way!"   However, realize that the subs do NOT get you high like other opiates, they do NOT make you crave your  d.o.c., and perhaps most importantly, there is NO tolerance which builds up in your system ... hence, you don't have to take more - your body doesn't need it.  What's more, the medical facts seem to show that the damage done to your brain from full opiates can, indeed, be repaired while using subs.  You can find balance, get back to normal, and gradually taper off.  If you go to naabt.org  you can get some amazing information regarding subs.  Good luck, my friend.

sub does cause headaches, VERY common side effect, and does go away, all meds have side effects you have to adjust to...
sub also has a ceiling effect so necessarily taking more doesnt really effect you the way it does if your taking methadone or any other opiods...sub will only help you so much because of the ceiling effect, BUT having said that, messing with your dose everyday will be of no help to you...my advice is to try a split dose of 4 mgs in the morning and then 4 mgs after dinner and STAY there until your body is adjusted to it (which takes about 5 days) and any withdrawals have passed (7-10 days?)...taking a different dose everyday will never let your body adjust and you will be flip flopping from feeling ok to sick to worse than ok again, and what you take today can still effect what you take for a dose the next day...and if your dose is too low, you will still experience withdrawals...everyone is different with this med...no 2 stories are alike. so get on a dose and stay there for at least 5 days then you will know how you feel and can adjust accordingly...remember i was on 32 mgs of sub when i started and was still EXTREMELY sick...but gave it time to adjust and then was able to taper down accordingly.  a lot of it has to do with how much opiods you were taking before you started the sub also....
you will feel different while on sub, what your feeling when you get your dose right should be normalcy with quite a bit of dysphoria (unfortunately), thats what your looking for...but it takes more time to get there if your dose isnt the same everyday, it takes time...it took  me almost 6 weeks because i switched from methadone...
it is VERY common to need more sub the first week while you body is ridding itself of your drug of choice...i also found that a split dose worked better than taking it all at once...let your body adjust to a certain amount for that 5 days, then you will be able to see what you need to do if anything at all...
good luck

Nice to see you post. it has been awhile...
The Dr wanted me to take 4mgs 4 times a day.. I really think it is to much for me. Yesterday I felt like I had had to much meds.. I slept most of the day, and all thru the night. You know that feeling you get, when you have taken to many pain pills. And the more you take the worse you feel? Thats is how I felt. Almost to the point of vomiting. I understand what you are saying. But with all that is happing to me, wouldn't a lower split dose be better? Then if I start to feel w/d's go up slowly? I feel more confortable doing that, Then getting to much of this med. Because with every dose I take, It makes me feel worse, not beeter! I had said my last dose yesterday was at 1:45pm, I took 2mgs. I was fine this A.M. Until I took 2mgs. About 45mins later I could feel the headache coming on. I eat something. Thinking I would feel better. I more I eat, The worse I feel. I now feel like vomiting... I need to go back to bed. I am thinking of skipping the afternoon dose. Only cause I know I will feel worse. I am thinking of waiting to dose until I feel I need it. I just can not contiune to take something I know will make me feel bad. You know? If I start to feel w/d's can I not then work my dose up, on how I am feeling? Better to little, then to much right? I do not really know much about this drug. The only thing I know for sure, Is that it makes me very sick!!

Sorry, to hear all this. It sounds like this sub isn't for you and maybe you should just stop it and not torture yourself. Besides, a lot of people are having trouble getting off of it and some have said the withdrawl was worse than real narcotics.

Darby's doctor's instructions sounded very reasonable...if u r using the drug short term that is...if the plan is long term it may would be differet...dont know as i havent taken sub but from all i have read i do think 16 mg is too much for u girl...u will get there....this i know (:

I am so sorry to hear that you are feeling sick.  I don't know anything about subutex, so I can't offer much help except to say, "Think how wonderful it will be to be rid of all the substances we fed our bodies with for so long.

Prayers and Have a Good Night

i dont understand why your doc said to take them 4 times a day...?  never heard of that before, usually its all at once or a split dose at most...?  8 mgs really isnt a high dose for the first week unless your tolerance was real low before you started it?...was it?
i think 4 times a day is too often...one dose can hold you for 24 hours?
i would try the split dose, twice a day, stay at one dose for 5 days until your body adjusts, thats typically how long it takes, then you will know where you stand with the dosing...
are you in any aftercare? as you know simply taking a pill to bypass withdrawals doesnt allow for the long term changes that need to be made for long term success...
good luck...
