Strange thick dry discharge causing pain and discomfort during sex

by purena, Jun 28, 2008 02:37PM
Hello DR. Hoyt,
This past month I have seen and felt a change in my vaginal discharge before or during sex. My discharge went from being wet, slippery and clear, to now thick, sour, clear white in color and dry. I’m starting to worry because it’s something I’ve never heard of. I wash my vagina correctly, I eat correctly, and I have even started eating yogurts thinking it may be a yeast infection. This strange discharge is uncomfortable, smells differently and is affecting my sex life. I now experience pain and discomfort during sex or have trouble getting “wet” while being aroused. What do I have? Or what is this? And what can I do to prevent this in the future? Please let me know how I can get everything back to normal with out telling me I have to see a Gyn. I had a horrible expirience when I went! :(

I look forward to your response!

Hi,

Yeast is certainly a possibility, but yeast does not have an odor, just cottage cheese like  looking, and it is itchy. Is there a chance your partner is using condoms with a lubricant that is causing the problem? Alternatively, if you are post menopausal, then decreased estrogen levels may be leading to decreased moisture in the vaginal tissues, which can be fixed with vaginal estrogen therapy. If the intercourse pain is a "scratchy" pain, then it may be related to the vaginal dryness, fixable with lubricants. If the pain is more deep and dull, then it may be related to pelvic floor muscle spasm, and may require attention by a pelvic floor physical therapist.
