Tumor in upper arm

by bebegirl, Jun 29, 2008 08:09AM
Hello,

My friend was told she has a tumor in her upper arm that is cancerous.  Her doctor started her on 25 days of radiation and and will be doing surgery to remove the tumor.  They told her that after the surgery she has to do another round of radiation and if that doesn't work that they would have to amputate her arm.  Is this a drastic step and why didn't they give her an option of chemotherapy?

Thank you,

Bebegirl

Hi,
The exact nature of the tumor is not known.Certain tumors will not be responsive to chemotherapy, which is probably why it has not been offered as an option.
Amputation must have been considered probably due to the extent of the spread of the tumor.
The sursery will be performed first to try and get out as much of the mass out as possible. In fact the radiation prior to it is to cause it to shrink, to facilitate easy removal.
So hope and pray for the best and that she will respond well to the surgery and radiotherapy.
Regards and God bless.
