Help please.....migrane or MS?

by SUTHRNGAL, Jun 29, 2008 07:51PM
have had sudden episodes of blurry left eye, lightheadedness and ringing in my ears.  Not sure if this is migrane without headache or MS or what?  Docs are passing me off and an ENT recently ordered an MRI of my brain to rule out MS.  Would they need to use the dye for this and would they also need to look at the optic nerve area and spine all while in there?  I do not want to have to have this over and over...if not warrented.  The ENT admitted that he knows nothing about migranes or Ms but HE WANTS TO BE THE ONE WHO ORDERS THE MRI.  I want a neurologist but I am having toi beg them for referrals.  HELLLLLLP please.  This has been two months of episodes.  Sometimes I am fine, others I am lightheaded and ringing is constant.  And if I need to be tested for Migranes...how do they do this?  Do I need an MRI and what type?  I am afraif this doc wants to see the brain MRI but may not be ordering the right thing.
Am frustrated and need help.

Side note...have severe neck tightness (like what i used to have during tension headache episodes), and yesterday I overheated and pulse was really fast with little exersion.  During episodes pin pricks in arms, hands, lower legs and when my neck is tense...have has numbness for 12 or so years in face and arm.  Thought it was due to neck tightness.

Hi there.

There are no specific tests for migraine, and the diagnosis is really based on the constellation of symptoms, as well as ruling out brain pathologies such as MS or brain tumors.  I agree that the MRI is in order to rule out MS.  The MRI can also evaluate other structures such as the optic nerves and rule out an optic neuritis.  The MRI image is enhanced by using the contrast and there should be no long lasting side effects.  For now, I believe that worrying will really not help, and I hope that the MRI can be done soon and the results available.  A neurologist referral is indeed warranted and I believe a little more prodding from your present doctors can make the persuasion.

Regards and God bless.

Will I need a MRI of just the brain or more for the viewing of the optic nerve?  Also do they have to look at the spine in the MRI for Ms diagosis?  Thanks for your time.  A CT scan showed nothing, thank God.I went to an audioologist who did two hrs worth of eye and hearing tests re: tracking etc.  it was fine.  a reg. eye doc said all is ok too.  ENT says he can not treat either Migranes or MS but is unwilling to relinquish the MRI tests and refer me to a neur.  GRRR.
