fluid in abdomen

by raven86, Jun 29, 2008 09:06PM
Hi for a year I've had a distended abdomen (which looks like im 3 months pregnant) with urgency and frequency in urination. My bladder also feels very heavy and full all the time but my OBGYN said the swelling is in my lower abdomen not my bladder and is sending me to get an ultrasound....anyone have any clue what could be wrong?  MY urine culture shows no bacteria and I have no pain.

It's possible you have an ovarian cyst. They can cause bloating, urinary urgency, changes in bowel habits, even affect your appetite. The ultrasound is a good idea. If you find you do have a cyst or cysts, there is now a forum called "ovarian cysts" on this site. The women there, myself included, have been through all of this including various surgeries so we/they can help you. Hope you get a good report.

Got my results to the abdominal and pelvic (transabdominal) ultrasound and turns out everthing is fine so far. My doctor said it could just be my body adjusting to being off the birth control. Also my doctor said since I was menstruating when I had the pelvic that it was a little hard to see but everything seems fine. Do I still need to do the transvaginal?

You've had the distended abdomen for a year according to your first message. If you've been off the pill that long as well, you should be adjusted by now. A transvaginal ultrasound gets up close and personal to your ovaries and such but if they didn't see anything obvious with the standard ultrasound then I'm not sure a TVUS would help much.

I can't begin to guess what else might be going on. But the bloating and urgency must be caused by something. My daughter went through a period when she had urinary urgency problems. Hers seemed to by caused by some serious stress in her life. She did take some of those pills (seen the commercials?) prescribed by a doctor but in time didn't need them anymore. She's fine now. If you're brave, you might ask for a second opinion.

Thanks for your reply I just might do that.  My stomach was distended for a year but since I stopped the birth control (3 months ago) I went down about 4 inches and havent lost any weight but as my stomach is going down now I have the urgency and frequency which i didnt have the whole year my stomach was like this.
