bleeding gums

by rbird, Jun 30, 2008 12:22PM
my daughter has been having trouble with her gums bleeding.  (not sure if this has anything to do with her POTS unless its her decreased saliva production).I made an appointment with a dentist and hygienist, but they cannot see her until Thursday.  has anyone else had this problem?  we are using warm salt water rinses, but other than that, does anyone have suggestions.  Thanks. rbird

HI I HAVE POTS AND ELHERS DANLOS SYNDOME.I KNOW THAT I HAVE PROBLEMS WITH MY GUMS  BUT THINK IT RELATED TO ELHERS DANLOS . HAS SHE EVER BEEN CHECKED TO SEE IF SHE MAY HAVE  EDS AS POTS IS ALSO RELATED TO THIS CONDITION. I FIND A WARM DRINK HELPS EASE DISCOMFORT AND ICE LOLLIES MADE WITH GATORADE HELP REDUCE ANY PAIN SHE MAY HAVE ALSO I USE ORALDENE  WHEN MY MOUTH IS BLEEDING AS A KING OF PREVENTATIVE FROM IFECTION. BUT SALT WATER ALSO GOOD. ALSO YOU KNOW WHEN A BABY IS TEETHING YOU GET THIS POWDER CALLED ASHTON POWDER FROM THE CHEMIST . WELL I RUB THIS INTO MY GUMS WHEN THEY ARE SORE AND IT SEEMS TO REALLY HELP REDUCE INFLAMATION AND DISCOFORT. AND THEY NOT TO DEAR THEY COST ME AROUND 1POUND 25 PENCE FOR PACK 10 SACHETS.

I don't know of any correlation between bleeding gums and Dysautonomia offhand, but that doesn't mean there isn't one.  I would definitely bring up these concerns to both your daughters dentist, as well as the doctor who treats her POTS symptoms.  Another possibility is that your daughters treatment could be effecting her gums.  Good luck, and I hope she is feeling better soon.

Thanks for your concern.  my daughter saw the dentist and hygienist last week and luckily her gums were not as bad as I thought.  basically she is having a lot of irritation from decreased saliva production (which is a dys symptom).  They recommended a line of products called Biotene that is used by patients on chemotherapy.  they have a very mild mouthwash and best of all, they make gum that increases saliva production.  (they also told her that she could chew a lot of sugar-free gum, but I would worry about her GI system.)
