D & C for retained placental fragments

I am now 8 wks pp and still have retained products from delivery. Last ultrasound showed it had gotten bigger, is this possible? I bleed everyday and have had some large clots, but it's still there. Now my dr wants to do a d & c, but I am sooooo scared of general anesthesia, what other options are safe for someone who is a freak about taking medicine!?!
