Scrotum abrasion

by Drex, Jun 30, 2008 04:51PM
I have had this on again off again spot that itches on my scrotum for years. Maybe 20 years or more. Lately it has become more pronounced and forms a dry  scab. When the dry scab drops off it is light in color ,itches occasionally untill it scabs again. It is about the size of a small fingernail. Dose anyone know what this is and how to treat it?

Thanks.

Either a fungus such as jock itch or dryness! Keep it lubricated with Cortizone 10 and you should be fine!!!

Ehh, that could be herpes.  Not enough information.  "on again off again" is a sign that it could likely be herpes.  How long does it last?  Is it a red bump or does it have any specific characteristics or what?

This is true Jason but the Scrotum isn't likely to be a place for an herpes outbreak!! On and off for 20 years without getting it checked out doesn't make sense to me either. I still don't think it's herpes. I get itchy scrotum every summer when I sweat in the hot weather and it is an on and off thing and I don't have herpes.. If you are concerned about HSV, get an IGG Herpes Select Test and you will have your answer but I bet anything it will be negative unless you have the classic childhood HSV1 disease which 50% of the population already has then it will show positive...

Thanks for the feedback guys

I actually asked a doctor about it a few years ago when it was less pronounced. He just shrugged like it was nothing important. So I figured that too. But lately, it is more constant. it has a lighter color than the surrounding skin, and is slightly raised.

Just wondered if I should see an std specialist or family practitioner. When I can afford it. No ins at the moment.

All true, scrotum makes it unlikely.  I thought he meant a specific spot that looked different and itched that came and went.  Everyone's nuts itch all the time.  Recently mine seem to itch more, but thats just because I've been dealing with anxiety over having had an uprotected encounter.

If its bothering you enough to make you come to this forum Drex, its well owrth the piece of mind to get a blood test. I only paid around $150 for the type I and II igG test which will accurately tell you if you have it or not (it's accurate at 4 months, you've been 20 years :P) and put your mind at ease.

Although Slacker is right, most likely its not herpes and you shouldn't worry about it, but if you're sexually active you have a 1/4 chance of having it so its not necessarily a BAD idea to get one, especially since odds are it's going to be negative and you'll feel better.

His Doctor shrugging it off was a smart move since it is not indicative of herpes. Put the Cortizone 10 on it which will help! This time of year with the summer heat and all, it is typical to get itching down there. Make sure you wear something so air can get in there. As far as the raised skin and colors and what not, if you scratch sensitive skin like the scrodum, it will do that.. It's not herpes.
