Chronic Cough going on 7+ years now

by HelpinLA, Jun 30, 2008 08:19PM
PLEASE HELP, in Los Angeles, saw doctors from St. Johns, to UCLA to Cedar Sinai.  Just can't find the right physician to cure.

I cough for about 1 hour straight through out the day and night EXCEPT when I am lying down.  I cough when I eat, drink or doing absolutely nothing I'll have a coughing fit as long as I am up right.

Twisted / Deviated Septum was finally discovered last year after years of testing i.e 48 Hr Esophageal pH Testing (2x), CT Scan of the Neck, Sinuses, Chest, numerous Lung Study, Esophagus Biopsy, Upper Endoscopy, Rediological Examination of the Esopphagus, CT Paranasal Sinused Limited Coronel, and so on not to mention numerous medication and drug therepy.

I need to stop this post nasal drip what have these doctors missed, what can I tell them because they are now asking me what do I want.  How do I know what I want, I am not a doctor.  I am trying to manage my health but I don't know what to do.

When I lay down (on my stomach) to sleep, when my right side of my head is on my pillow, my right nastil plugs up and the left is mostly open.  If I turn my head to the left, my left nastil will clogged up etc.  When I wake in the morning (no coughing and no problem sleeping) I cough for about an hour.  Then I quiet down but it won't be long I will have my coughing fit.  This has affect my professional and personal life not to mention me!

Please advise.  THANK YOU!! FOR ANY LIGHT YOU CAN SHINE.

Hi, I'm sorry for your problem.  I have allergies and sinus problems at times and I often cough, but not for an hour.  What I do have is constant post-nasal drip, one side stuffy nose and acid reflux.  I'm sure the doctors considered this, but acid reflux makes me cough, definitely.  I am always clearing my throat.

Not to be depressing, but I have just learned to live with it. I have never smoked or used drugs either.  I do have a cat, but I love him and I'm not blaming it on him.  Anyway, compared to all my other problems, I sort of ignore this.  But there are times my glands get swollen and my throat hurts from the drip.  It is very annoying, and I can imagine how it drives you crazy.

The one thing you can try, if you haven't already, is sinus irrigation.  I did that for a while, and it helped a bit, but then I got lazy and stopped.

HI,

Well it's hard to continue to live with this believe me, how would you like to cough for about an hour at dinner or sit by someone who cant' stop coughing or you're at work and you start your fit and everyone stops by and ask are you okay, do you need water, on a daily basis or in the store strangers ask are you okay, need water.  No this is huge.  I no longer have a job.  I've taken numerous allergy test, nothing, I've taken 48 Hr  pH Esophagus Testing which is a capsule clipped in your throat and every time you cough you push this button which is matched with Acid Reflux.  If the timing of your cough matches the acid reflux then it is the reason you cough, but the 2xs I had this capsule in my throat (yes you can feel it when you swallow and hurts when you eat) it didn't match, it's not the cause.  And what’s worse is some doctors tell you it's in your head.  I wouldn't mind the occasional cough. I've heard it all, I just need answers.  I need to find a doctor who does laser surgery that has dealt with this issue.but thank you for your thoughts,
