Sand Blasting Injury

by mariadpp, Jun 30, 2008 09:45PM
My husband sand blasted nearly the entire inside of his left arm September 2007.  The injury healed well and then winter (we live in a cold climate) dryness caused problems with flaking so we started using various creams recommended, one of them being vitamin E, that caused his injury to open up again, so then the doctor recommended a zinc based cream to use, the arm continued to open more, this went on for several months.  By the time we ended up at the plastic surgery specialists, he had an severe case of dermatitis (was their diagnosis) from allergy to the zinc that was being used.  The skin did heal within 3 weeks of using a product he was not allergic to but the pain from the injury continues to be intense and we don't understand why the pain continues now when it did not the first time.  They gave him a jobst stocking which we tried for a week but ended up putting that aside as it was causing the skin to tear and open up again, we now use just the elastic bandage socks that eventually stretch and need to be replaced.  He currently takes Percoset during the day and morphine at night to combate the pain and that is with very little effect.  Looking for any alternative suggestions to combate the pain.

My husband had his back sandblasted and the sand is still in his skin. The Dr would not attempt to take it out because he said there's really no need. He has sand embedded very deep in his back the size of two men's hands. He has never complained with it other than sometimes it itches a little. I am sorry your husband is going through this, has he tried trigger points? I am assuming there is nerve damage and while opioids do help pain he really needs to be on something made for nerve damage. Lyrica is a new drug for nerve damage so maybe he could ask his Dr about it. I am not aware of any more natural approaches that work to be honest. There are some members here that go the more natural way and they could assist you with that. There are several herbs and such but they have never worked for me. Have him try heat/ice and talk to his Dr about nerve meds and trigger points.
