by dee9163, Jul 01, 2008 08:24AM
I went to the doctor to get my first sonogram to see how far along i was after taking a home pregnacy test. and the doctor told me that he could not see anything? he then told me it was either to early or i was having a ectopic pregnancy. i have been reading up on this and scared to death, the symptoms for a normal pregnacy are simliar?? My guess is im about 4 weeks pregnant. Has anyone else had this problem?

If your about 4 weeks it could be too early to see anything.  Your hcg levels (pregnancy horomone) needs to be at like 1800-2000 (I think) for you to be able to see anything on an u/s.  The same thing happened to be when I was m/c'ing, they said it was either too early in the pregnancy or I was miscarrying (I was at the ER with heavy bleeding and cramping).  The doctor should be monitoring your beta hcg levels to make sure they are rising properly.  Once they reach a certain number then they can do an u/s and see something.  I would wait a few weeks before another u/s is done because sometimes it takes time for everything to show up.

If you figure you are approx 4 wks along, then yes it is too early to see anything.  Typically you won't begin to see anything (gestational sac, yolk sac, fetal pole) until the 6th week or so.  Even then your timing could be off.  So long as you aren't bleeding, cramping more severe than typical menstrual cramps, running a fever or anything unusual as that, I would try to relax and wait a couple of weeks for a repeat u/s.  Has your doc schedule you for one yet?

With this pregnancy I was approx 5 wks 3 days when i had my first u/s and we couldn't see anything....I went back in 3 weeks and everything was just fine...heartbeat and all.  I wouldn't worry yourself right now... odds are leaning more towards it being too early.

What Km604 said is somethign I forgot.  Has the doc checked your HCG levels???  He should monitor those by taking blood every 2-3 days to make sure the levels are doubling as necessary...this is another good indicator that things are going well.
