Can Chiropractic care help me???

by mckinneyrdj, Jul 01, 2008 01:37PM
I am a 27 year old nurse with two small children who injured my back 3 months ago while transferring a patient.  Currently I am being treated with oxycodone, skelaxin, Celebrex, and physical therapy.  I just received my MRI results and they are as follows:

L1-2, L2-3- mild disc desiccation
Lumbar canal is not all in the same plane on each sagittal scan, suggesting some tilting of the lumbar spine
Facet joint tropism L2-3, L3-4, L4-5, L5-S1
L3-4- minimal posterior convexity of the disc
L4-5- focal central posterior disc bulge that impinges on the thecal sac and borderline central stenosis.  Synovitis in the facet joints and trace fluid is seen at this level.
No abnormality is seen in the neuroforamina, no acute bony abnormality is seen.

My symptoms:  Constant dull backache beginng in the lumbar area all the way to the coccyx which radiates to the left side.  Constant "pins/needles" in my left leg all the way to the sole of my foot.  Normal reflexes in left leg.  Occassional weakness in left leg.  Intermittent cramping/stabbing pains down left leg.  Intermittent sharp pains in lumbar area. Hypersensitivity of skin in lumbar area (it actually hurts if you touch it lightly, but doesn't if you use moderate or high pressure).

Currently no one as suggested chiropractic care, but I am sick of using medicines to cover up the symptoms.  Is it safe to use a chiropractor with these findings/symptoms???

Thank you for your time!

Thanks for writing.

I would give you the thumbs up to consult with a chiropractor. You have a lot of choices though, so make sure you don't just pick someone randomly out of the phone book.

The best thing to do is ask people you know who they'd recommend. If the same name pops up more than once, that would be a doctor to consider. You can also find a specialist in your area on this website: www.UpCspine.com -- a lot of great docs across the globe are listed there.

Taking medicine to cover up symptoms is not ever going to eliminate the cause of someone's health problem. You have to find the source! There's an old Latin phrase I have up in my office: "Sublata Causa, Tollitur Effectus" -- It means, "The effect ceases when the cause is removed." Chiropractors often do a great job of finding that cause.

Best of luck to you, and I hope you find this info is beneficial.

Warm wishes,
AT
