For a friend

by Steph4302, Jul 01, 2008 10:26PM
My roommate's father was diagnosed with kidney cancer around 4 years ago. He had surgery and I believe most of the cancer was removed. A few months ago, he ended up in the hospital again and cancer was found in his pancreas, lungs, and part of his duodenum (sp?). He underwent and completed radiation about one week ago. Last week he began feeling very nauseous and had severe headaches. He ended up in the ER on Friday and a small tumor was found on his right parietal lobe in his brain. Doctors want to do 11 rounds of radiation to this brain tumor. He was supposed to start chemo for the other cancerous areas but this is now delayed. I am assuming from what I have read that he is in Stage 4. Does this sound correct? Also, does this treatment seem to be right? Are there any other options that he may have? What are the chances that he may pull through? I am very worried. Thank you for your time.

Hi,

Yes you are right in saying that this is stage 4 cancer as it has spread to other parts of the body. http://www.cancerhelp.org.uk/help/default.asp?page=4040
I can understand your anxiety but radiation therapy is  the primary treatment option in this case.
Apart from radiotherapy some new treatment options can be tried by participating in clinical trials.Mayo clinic participates in a lot of clinical trials in brain tumors http://www.mayoclinic.org/brain-tumors/treatment.html
