Pneumonia & inflamed (enlarged) heart in healthy young male

My extremely fit and healthy 24yo son was diagnosed with pneumonia; he is recovering but has now been diagnosed with an inflamed or enlarged heart (seeing a specialist tomorrow). He is in the military in a physically demanding specialty, and is v. concerned that he will be unfit for continuing on his selected path.
Is such a reaction typical, and if so will the heart condition be curable to the extent that he will be able to continue his activities?
