Do I need to tooth extraction, Can I save my tooth?

by savetooth, Jul 02, 2008 01:51PM
Hi, I got toothache two weeks ago. After I visit my dentist, they found out one of my tooth have pocket depth11 in one point of my lower back tooth. They suggest a tooth extraction, and get second oponion. I ate anitbiotic and now my toothache is gone, I started root canal on that tooth, and doctor recommand me to see a gum specialist before they do the root canal. They said I have Periodontal Disease, I am wondering if this tooth can be saved by the gum specialist. Is sugical gum treatment can save my tooth? Can I  save my tooth for serveral more years? If I have to extract my tooth, since is the lower back tooth (last one) will it effect my facial structure? any side effect?

Thanks.

I would consult with the periodontist (gum specialist) to see what can be done to save the tooth.  With a pocket depth of 11mm, it can be very difficult to maintain the oral hygiene to prevent further problems with the pocket.  You may be able to keep the tooth for several more years but there's always a potential for it to develop problems and result in a periodontal abscess which can be dangerous.

Doctor Tsang:

Thanks a lot for the answer!!!
You mentioned that periodontal abscess which can be dangerous. Can you explain what kind of dangerous is there? If later I got it, then I can do tooth extraction? or that tooth could effect other tooth? or causing other problems? I am trying to make right decision here. Really appreciated!!!
