Hip/thigh pain

by AnnaE, Jul 03, 2008 03:01AM
For about eight days, I have experienced difficulty walking because I feel a pain where the hip and thigh join. I thought that perhaps it is a torn ligament, but I have not fallen lately. I have arthritis, mainly in the back, and I have had a knee replacement, two years ago.

The only thing that I have done differently was to use my exercise ball once, because I could not exercise outdoors. I have had pain in this joint before--from falls, etc. This time, the pain came about when I was sick and I was weak and had difficulty walking.

What MD specialist do I need?

Hi anna,

I'm sorry to hear that your having pains in your hips and and thigh joint or muscles. I would make an app with a Orthopaedic and see if they can fnd out what the problem may be.

Have you tried using Cold and hot compresses and poistioning your leg above your heart?
You may also want to use epsom salts in a hot bath while you wait for an app with yur DR.  Epsom salt are great for helping to reduce pain and inflamation.
It's possible using the ball in some way pulled a muscle in that area. You may want to make sure that your arthritis isnt effecting your hip and thigh joint also.
Sometimes ligaments can be pulln without realizing it until the pain begins.

I'm sure others who have alot more knowlege than I do about this type of possible injury or some other ideas as to what the problem may be will be by to answer your question also.
I hope you can get it taken care of and its just a simple rest and ice type of treatment.

Thanks!

I used to be a community leader on eye care. Iloved it--but I have other obligations. I do it unofficially when I have time

We are glad to have you here!
I am thinking you may have sciatica trouble that is precisely where mine hurts and it is worse in the mornings and while trying to sleep. I agree with TMA you need a orthopedist to check it out.

The pain felt like it was interior--at the joint. However, I have found a sore spot in the exterior joint area/ I often bump into things--like walls. I lost much vision in one eye in last year due to bad retina.

I want to go swimming. Should I wait until I see the doctor?

Actually swimming would do you good in my opinion. My hips have very sore spots right where they join. The water makes your legs feel weightless in a sense and takes pressure off.
Enjoy swimming:)

I have not noticed it hurting when I sleep. Maybe I will now.

Hi anna,

Be careful not to notice too closely, you may start to feel some pain you may not have noticed if you werent. You know what I mean? Its important to know when your in pain and when your not but if you go to bed expecting to feel it then chances are you will.
I know if I go to bed thinking about my pain(sometimes its so bad I cant help but think about it) then when my mind quiets all of a sudden thats all I feel and I defenitly wont fall to sleep if that happens.

Just thought I'd mention that

I am sorry you have more pain. I also recommend that you see a orthro. It sounds like bursitis. The hip joint contains the largest bursa in our body, it is filled with a fluid that helps the motion of the hip joint and when that becomes inflammed it is extremely painful. You may not have that at all but it comes to mind when you describe you pain. You may have a flare up of your arthritis in that joint. As mentioned above try (low) heat or ice which ever feels better. Ice will help reduce the inflamtion but may not bring comfort to the area. Be sure and consult your PCP or Ortho ASAP.
Best of luck to you.
