questions about sippy cups and formula

by tiredbuthappy, Jul 03, 2008 07:31AM
i'm going to make a walmart run to stock up on some formula. DD will be 1 year old in 2 weeks, but is definitely not ready to go off of formula. She likes solid foods, but only picks and never eats enough to fill her. she's still taking around 30 ounces of formula/day, in addition to 3 "meals" and several snacks. she probably wouldn't get enough nutrition switching to cow's milk. She only has 2 bottom teeth so everything i offer her has to be easy to gum. anyways, i'm not worried about her eating- the ped didn't even want us to think about weaning her off formula til after 12 months anyways.
my question is, did anyone switch over to the formula for older babies? i have been giving her some, but only because we've been inundated with free samples. since most people are scared to switch their formula, we get everyone's samples. dd does great on any formula. should i switch or keep buying the little infant formula? is there a difference?

my next question is about sippy cups. she still can't get it. she does get some sips out of soft-spout sippies, but that's because they release liquid when she chomps on the spout. she does not understand to suck, so straw cups don't work. neither do hard spout cups with valves. if i take the valve out she may swallow a little of what drips into her mouth, but she just can't figure out the sucking thing. she actually does well if i have her sip out of a real cup, but that's not very convenient when out and about. did/does anyone else's baby have this problem? what cups work for you? i know we're supposed to start trying to make the switch once she's one.

We removed the valves from the sippy cups.    I don't know of anyone that switched to the formula for older babies.    Have you compared the two to see what the difference is?

Have you tried Nubby.  My son didn't get the sippy for a long time but this one and the chealy disposable kind worked for him.

I read the ingredients a while back on the two formulas and I think the toddler one had more calcium and other vitamins in it (plus extra iron?).

Unless your dd isn't going to be able to supplement the extra vitamins/calcium/etc... in the few foods that she does eat, you should be able to stick with regular formula. If she doesn't eat enough to supplement the additional vitamins, then maybe the toddler formula would be a wise choice. I'm sure she'll be fine either way, because they JUST came out with the toddler stuff  in the past year or so, and apparently a lot of babies turned out just fine from remaining on regular formula. As long as she gets SOME whole milk and cheese and other foods with iron/protein, I would think that's enough to supplement the regular formula. You don't want her constipated from all the extra iron and calcium in the toddler formula combined with what she's eating. Not saying this would be a definite, but you never know. Heck, just switching my ds to whole milk caused him to be a little more constipated in the beginning.

As for the sippy cups...I'm still struggling with that myself! He will suck on them a little, but mainly likes to chew on the spouts.

i did use the enfamil next step formula for a little while but only because i got coupons and free samples. its not much different. and i don't think its that much cheaper either. i just used it until i had no more coupons left and to help transition edward to the cow's milk. i did half and half until the formula was gone. we had no problems switching to cow's milk though, other than whole milk giving him diarreah and having to go to 2%. edward is not the best eater either and at his 1 year check-up, i asked the doctor to prescribe vitamens in place of the formula. he hated them. but i felt better giving them to him.

as for the sippy, i remember edward not really getting it at first and mostly just chewing on them. it probably didnt help that he was teething at the same time also, hence the chewing. i just kept giving it to him with every meal and in-between and he eventually got the hang of it. he lis almost 18 months now and drinks everything out the sippy, but still gets milk in a bottle in the am, before naps and before bed. i know i have to cut it out soon, but i dread it. haha. just keep giving her the sippy and eventually she'll get it out of there. i wouldn't reccommend taking out the vaulve because it can get messy. i also find the nubby sippys were messier until they really get the hang of it b/c the soft spout allows whatever is inside to come out alot easier. edward found out that he could squeeze it and hold it upside down and make a puddle! haha. he loves them now though and is a lot better with it. good luck, i can't beleive your munchkin will be one! :o)
