Hyperthyroidsm & your period

by ar1281a, Jul 04, 2008 11:18AM
has anyone experienced period problems when hyper? I've been experiencing sever problems and was found that I was very hyper. Anyone knows how long for this to regulate? also, my endo wants to check my blood again in four weeks, I feel like 2 weeks is better, any ideas? after almost three weeks on meds I'm still experiencing elevated heart rate and palpitations. My TSH was less than 0.004 and my FT4 was 3.54 (0.61-1.76 normal).

It can take 6 weeks to actually get any real result with medication. It is not sadly like an aspirin that works immediately. It is a complicated thing the thyroid does so it does take time. At 4 weeks the endo will see if your levels have increased and will know if the dosage is the right one for now.
What kind of severe problems do you mean with your period? Heavy, painful?
What dose are you on now for the thryoid? And lastly what is the FT3 level?

I have normal limit blood tests and have problems - either absent or too long.  April and June was absent and May was too long.  I take thyroid med - .25 Levothyroxine.  Still trying to figure out it it is related to the goiter / swelling thyroid.  I have no clue.

Thanks, I take 15 mg of tapazole (for 3 weeks now). By problems I mean that I've been having extremely light periods and painful. My endo didn't check for T3 levels, said that FT4 was the one to check when one is hyper with TSH. Thanks for the comments

When I was hyper Graves I had really no periods at all. Before Dx'd - I thought it was great. I don't remember having much pain either.

After a while - other symptoms started to appear that I knew something was wrong.  I lost a ton of weight in a short time and then the heart palps and sweating constantly trembling came on.

Hello! I'm hyperthyroid also...Because mine is thyroiditis, but nonGraves, I was able to just take just propanolol (a medication that controls your heart rate and blood pressure). In two days, I felt WAY better! I didn't feel constantly exhausted, I wasn't as hot all the time (I still run warm) and I could sleep a bit better. I do still have the other effects -especially the "premenopausal" type things...Hot flashes on occ, light periods (1-2 days) or not at all for a month or so, Godzilla PMS...The tremors aren't as bad, and I don't feel like my heart is pounding in my ears or is going to come out of my chest...the med is also called Inderal, and I take 10 mg X2 a day...Hope this helps!

I have hyperthyroidism and my periods are extremely light.  I hardly even have cramps.

Uh yeah, like I haven't had a period or able to get preganant since 2000. Yet I do not show to be menopausal? Go figure- I thought that's what Menopause meant!
