Could I have a thyroid problem

by JaysonThomas, Jul 04, 2008 10:26PM
I was wondering if it's possible that I could have a thyroid problem. I can barely make it through the day. I keep trying to push through it but most days end with me going to sleep on the floor or not being able to get up at all. After I eat, I sometimes become dizzy and blurry and sometime I can't even sit up. Sometimes I spend all my energy trying to get upstairs to the kitchen that I can't even get something to eat. I just go to sleep in front of the fridge for a little while. I sometimes feel drugged and go into a state where I'm laughing and playing around and I don't even have the strength to stand up. I have a hard time keeping my eyes from crossing and I can't even write my name on a piece of paper when I'm really sick. I get dizzy often and sometimes turn pale. Sometimes I have a hard time breathing. Large dozes of caffeine usually make that go away. In fact caffeine is the only thing that helps me to be somewhat normal for a couple of hours. I'm so feed up. I've been sick for a long time now. If anyone has any suggestion for me I would love to hear them. My info - (I'm 28, I'm about 180 pretty lean) Thanks in advance.

I wouldn't say it was a thyroid problem but more an adrenal problem...in fact it could be Addison's Disease.  Stimulants (as in caffeine) are often a way of coping just to get up and go. Have you noticed it got worse after any stressful event (good stress, like getting married, getting a new job, winning the lotto, bad stress, losing your job, seeing your house burn down, finding your cat dead on the floor) it is still seen as stress on the body.
Have you had any thyroid tests done at all? Hypo can make a person pretty darn whacked. I know I felt like death warmed up earlier this year.  If you are hypo you would more than likely have put on weight without even eating any thing more than usual, but you say you are pretty lean  You need to get TSH, Free T3 and Free T4.  I'd be telling your doctor to do some cortisol tests too. You need to do that at home in the morning. Simple test no pain involved!
If it is Addison's you need help immediately as left untreated it can be fatal.
Go to your doctor as soon as you can and get the tests done, and let us know how you got on.

Thank you for your response. I think it might be time to put myself in the hopital. I barely can take care of myself anymore. I've been sick for a long time now and I'm not getting any better. When they find out whats wrong I'll summit another post. Maybe it will help someone else down the line. Thanks.
