Blighted Ovum Scare: Should I prepare for the worst?

by Katbeth, Jul 05, 2008 07:51PM
I missed my period on what should have been the 28th of June. A couple of days before that, I experience very light pink bleeding, which my doctor tells me now was implantation bleeding. On the 1st of July, I started experiencing a dull pain on my right side, which scared me. I took an at home preg test, which came back with a faint positive. I visited a local clinic since my doctor's office was closed. They did a blood test, and told me I was pregnant, but it was very very early. I asked the nurse who called if I could have my hcg levels, and she said that she didn't have them with her, so I have no idea how high or low it was. Ectopic was a concern of mine, so I called my doc, and she got me in for an ultrasound immediately that day. On there, they saw that my right ovary was bigger than the left one, which, they explained, was in preparation to support the corpus lentum cyst which will help baby. The nurse guessed I was about 4 weeks along. They saw an amniotic sac in the uterus, but no signs of a fetal pole. She's now testing my blood for the next two weeks to watch for signs of hCG doubling, but explained to me in the mean time, that this could be a blighted ovum. Either it's too early to tell if baby is there or not, or baby wasn't ever there. I feel pregnant. I'm bloated, I'm crampy (absolutely no bleeding or spotting), having cravings, food aversions, and very tender and swollen breasts. How can I know for my own ease and peace of mind if this is a blighted ovum? Do I just wait? My husband and I are basically keeping the confirmed pregnancy quiet until we know. I keep thinking though, other women this early would not worry about such a thing until around 6 weeks when given reason to worry. Why do I have to?

I had a blighted ovum in october of 2007. I had all the signs of being pregnant also. Morning sickness, tender breast, cravings and so on. I see that you are only 4 weeks though, sometimes a u/s cannot see the baby that soon. I was almost 9 weeks when i was diagnosed with my blighted ovum.

Something else i wanted to say. I also had an ectopic pregnancy late march. I was doubled over in pain from my right side, they did a urine test and told me that i was very early in my pregnancy and that the bleeding that i was seeing was to result in a blighted ovum or m/c because they couldnt see anything on the u/s. So they also did an hCG which came back very low. So blah blah blah, they sent me home, well 2 days later the pain was still very intense, I went to my ob, and I was told i had an ectopic pregnancy, due to how my hCG level was rising very slowly.

I hope that all turns out in your favor though :) good luck.

To: everyone
Ok, I just had my period 2 weeks ago, and then a few nights ago i start again. but instead of being red like it normally is, its DARK brown and even black. and i have REALLY bad stomach pains, Am I pregnant or something or Am I just worried for nothing? I mean I even feel sick most of the time, Like a bad staomach ache. it doesnt feel like a normal period cramp. and i dont see why i would get it again two weeks early. And then all day today my breasts have been tender. I dont see how i can be pregnant but I need someone elses opinion before I go to the docs for nothing jusst in case. Someone please let me know!

4 weeks is way too early to see any fetal pole.  you need to wait at least 2 more weeks.  good luck.
