Hydrocodone causing depression

by Theegg, Jul 06, 2008 01:59AM
I had my wisdom teeth pulled a few weeks ago and i was prescribed Hydrocodone to take 1 to 2 every 8 hours.  I only had 18 of them and i took them as directed until my pain stopped.  After i stopped i was feeling fine, then about 3 or 4 days after i stopped taking it i started feeling very depressed.  I still don't know what caused it for sure, all i know is that for the past week or so i've been angry at everybody and apologizing atleast once every time i talk to someone even though i do nothing wrong.  I can't help but feel like **** anytime i think about myself.  I've looked at some of the symptoms and they match up exactly with dysthymia except that i haven't felt that way for over 2 years.  I just wanted to know if it was possible to feel very depressed after abruptly stopping the use of Hydrocodone

Well, I could see if you had been taking them for a long period of time?  But sounds like you only had a few.  Anything is possible, but I doubt it was the pain medication.  Opiates stay in your system for up to 72 hours after the last dose, after that none circulating.  Check back later in the day, as the site is VERY slow right now.  I'm sure you will get more answers as everyone starts waking up.  Hang in there!

it's possible it was the vic's.  you could be very sensitive to them...

drink alot of fluids, get some exercise, and give it a few more days.  by then, it should really all be out of your system.

if you then still feel the same way, talk to your doctor or therapist or some medical professional.  or, if you're able - look at why you are having angry, intense feelings.  usually by sitting quietly for a few minutes it can come up... journaling is also an amazing tool to "uncovering" hidden feelings, that lie just beneath the surface..

also, dysthymia is just another word for low grade depression.  which while it's labeled "long term" could actually be the onset, if you are just now feeling this way.

depression is very common, and very real.

but again, could be the vic's. don't worry - there's a way through this - no matter what the cause.

warmly,
mj

thanks for helping me. I think it was the vic's because i never take any pain medication for anything, i think over the entire course of my life i've taken like 20 over the counter pain meds so i have no tolerance to pain meds at all. I've been off the medicine for about a week and a half now but i know its nothing in my life causing it... i've always been a happy person and my girlfriend is the best i can ask for (8 months and haven't had one fight or arguement). We tried just sitting and figuring out whats bothering me and anything that was on our minds we said.. all it ended with was us telling eachother how much we love eachother so its not from her lo

Hi there....I was going to tell you I had a very similiar experience when I was younger and had my tonsils out. I was a young adult but had never taken hydrocodone before. Well, I was on the liquid hydrocodone for about 10 days - 2 weeks.... I went through 3 bottles of it I think. I did quit using it when the pain was gone and oddly back then I didn't like how it made feel. Anyway, when I quit taking it I went through what you are going through...I was moody, grouchy, cried all the time and I couldn't stand anybody. It lasted me about 2 weeks then I got back to normal. So I think it is very possible that's what it was.

Thanks, i'll post again in a few weeks later if i start feeling better, today was already getting alot better. I went out and spent the day with my girlfriend and her mom and it wasn't too bad, i'm feeling pretty good right now and i'm gonna spend the night with some friends trying to take my mind off of everything.  I found that writing out a list of questions that would run through my mind at any time and realizing how stupid something i was worried about was made me feel alot better.

Thanks again,
Tommy
