How long does it take for your milk to dry up?

by KStarr07, Jul 06, 2008 02:19PM
I quit breastfeeding 2 weeks ago, and I still have some milk left that will leak if any pressure is put on my breasts or my nipples are stimulated in any way at all. How long before it's gone?? Shouldn't it have dried up by now? They are back to normal size, they don't hurt, and my milk doesn't let down a bunch of times throughout the day anymore. So what's up with that?

Hi!  Sometimes it can take up to a year or longer.  Everyone is different.  It's totally normal that they aren't dried up.  The milk glands can hold on for awhile!  But in all honesty, you could have up to a year where you will get milk if you squeeze your nipple!

My MIL had 5 years of leaking breasts before hers dried up.

My bbs went down after two weeks but it took quite a while for the milk to actually dry up.  I stopped bfing at 10wks and Jacob is almost 5 months now.  I can still get some clear liquid to come out but no more leaking.

I nursed for 10 1/2 months, my son is now 18 months old and I still haven't completely dried up but I don't get let down anymore, just a few drops now and then.

UGH! lol
This su'cks. I don't want to have to wear stupid breast pads forever in fear that I'll get an embarrassing spot on my shirt at any moment. :(
But thanks, atleast I won't worry that there's something wrong.

I didn't wear breast pads the whole time. After the initial two weeks, the amount was so little and it happened so infrequent that the regular padding in my bra prevented any embarrassment.

I breastfed for 2 months and my son is now 7 1/2 months and if I squeeze my breasts milk still comes out.  It doesn't leak on it's own and it's only a couple of drops but it could take a while before they dry up.

I officially dried up about six months ago. My son is 3½ years old.
I stopped leaking consistently after about a month of weaning him when he was 8 months old, but up until everything dried up a few months ago, I'd still leak a few drops if I'd get cold and shiver (weird, I know) or if I'd have a really emotional or hormonal moment.
You get used to it after a while, especially when the leaking only consists of a drop or two, so it's no big deal.
