pumping to store question

by spade22, Jul 07, 2008 01:56PM
Hi Ladies,

I asked this on the BF forum but that is sometimes slow so Im going to post it here too.

Jazmine is "almost" 3 weeks old today which means I will be returning to work in 7 weeks ;(    Anyway, I am starting to pump/store breast milk so hubby can feed her when I'm at work (he will be a stay at home dad).  What I am wondering is how much (volume) should I be aiming to pump on a daily basis to build up somewhat of a supply for when I go back to work?  Approximately, how much milk does a 2 month old need on a daily basis?

I think every baby is different and it's hard to tell how much breast milk they drink if you nurse exclusively.  I would pump after each nursing section and see if you can boost you supply a bit.  I'd start with freezing 2 - 4 ozs bag so you can try on her before you return so you 'd be able to tell how much she drinks at a time then go from there.  After all, you don't want to waste too much of the liquid gold!  You can always add 2 oz at a time is she seems hungry after a bottle feeding.

Now, you will be pumping at work right?

Im going to pump at work but my friends have advised my to start pumping NOW because in their case, they can barely keep up (they are using everything they pump the next day and have no supply for a "rainy day")!  I have pumped a few times between BF sessions and the most I can get is 3 oz from each breast  and thats only if they are engorged.  Last night after I had pumped we decided to see what volume she would drink and she consumed all 3 oz in one session!

Correct, your supply might even decrease after you return to work due to stress.  So it is very important to start pumping now.  You won't get too much at the beginning but your supply will build up.  After all, you have 7 more weeks to stock up.  Just keep pumping after each session.  Eventually she won't eat as often as she gets older and you can still pump the milk if she skips a middle of the night feeding.  Lots of work but so rewarding.

Good luck!
