Surgery or Not?

by artis25, Jul 07, 2008 08:37PM
I have severe kyphosis which measures 110 degrees from C5 to T10. I also have a myelomalacia
at the T5-T7 level from an auto accident in 1998. (10 yrs ago). I had the fusion cage removed on
March 20, 2008 because it was pressing the spinal cord @ T4 thru T7. Heres the question.
"If I have rods surgically implanted to correct the 110 degree curvature from C5 thru T10, will
that help my pain or balance or leg weakness or will the myelomalacia make the surgery useless.
Also, I can walk with a kane and I am 54 yrs old. Should I play it safe or go for it.
Or maybe if I repair the abut or pressure @ the L4 and L5 nerve root first and see what that buys me.

Hi there.

Due to the severity of the kyphosis, I'm not sure if this can be addressed by a single shot of surgery.  If ever, it will most likely be a series of surgeries that will slowly correct the angle and alignment of the spine.  These surgeries are still of no assurance that you can recover the weakness and balance especially if the condition has lasted for years.  I suggest you talk to your surgeon at length regarding this matter, and more over, surgeries have their risks.  Regards.
