HSV-1 Question.

I have recently bee diagnosed with hsv-1. I have contracted this from a former boyfriend genitally and have had only the initial breakout so far. I know that this is a highly contagious virus and understand that although genital hsv-1 is not as common (or maybe it is but I mostly hear things about type 2 regarding genitals) type 1 hsv is a fairly common virus. Many people in my family have even gotten cold sores on their mouth and never made it an issue when dating people. Im not sure if I take the necessary preventive medications such as lysine, if I am suppose to tell someone before kissing them in the future. As long as I am not having an active outbreak that is.  I understand that no matter what, I would tell them that I had it genitally, if we were to plan on having a more intimate relationship, but as far as just kissing, should I always tell them that I carry this virus? If I were to be shedding the virus and not know, and I were to kiss someone and they got it from me, I would feel horrible.  So I guess I just don't know why people do not take the initiative to tell the person they are kissing, knowing that they have a contagious virus if they should.  It may not be a big deal or it may be, Im not so sure and this is all so new to me. Also my last question is, is hsv-1 less contagious than 2?

Your answers would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You
