leg tingling

Lately I have been having a tingling/numb feeling on the outer part of my leg, above the knee. It is really bad when I try to go to sleep. I can only sleep on my stomach with my legs out behind me, or my leg tingles and begins to burn. It feels like it is on fire when it does this. It will start going numb at about anytime, in any position when I am sitting or standing still. I was in a car accident a few years ago and had pretty bad whiplash. I didnt know if that had anything to do with it.

Hi. From what you have described, it seems that you may really have a primary neurologic problem that may have involved some nerves being compressed at the level of the spine. This can be worked up through imaging studies such as MRI of the spine. Another possibility is vascular problems taht can cause insufficient blood supply to the muscles and skin of the thigh giving rise to all of these symptoms. Vascular problems are common in people with comorbid diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, or high blood cholesterol. Since there can be several possibilities, it is best that you have this checked by your doctor. Regards and God bless.
