Seeing flickering lights

I noticed this a couple nights ago, I was looking at a night light while lying in bed when suddenly it seemed to flicker. I continued staring at it and the light flickered more, not on and off but change from bright to dim and back then repeats the same pattern over and over. This seems to happen every night when I lay in bed and stare at a night light, if I look at the ceiling I can still see the light flickering like a lit candle. Is there an explanation for this?
