Surgery Recovery??? Will I be able to care for kids?

by Mystee73, Jul 09, 2008 09:02PM
Those of you with kids, how hard was taking care of then post surgery?  I have a 2 y.o and 4 y.o and will have a 2 day min. hospital stay, but wonder how much help I'll need/want with them for how long when I get home.  Husband is in the Army and trying to do as much planning in advance as I can.  Just thankful he's home right now and not out of the country.  I haven't even had my appointment with my surgeon yet, sure I'll have ALOT more questions as I really get into this process.  Thanks

You may want some help because you will be tired for awhile and your voice will not work as well.  With little ones you will be running a lot.  If you can have some backup for awhile I would recommend it.

I am also interested in this. I will be having surgery to remove a nodule that the fna said was undetermined if it was benign or malignant. I also have two children and wonder how many days I will out and not able to care for them.

I had my R side thyroid removed because of a huge benign nodule and had the help of my mother to watch my kids.  I would suggest for at least two days after getting some help with the kids,,especially having younger ones that are so demanding.  I hope all works out with you both who are getting the surgery.  Let us know the outcome :)

I was fine after a few days, but my daughter is in daycare two days a week, so that worked out well.  I had a REALLY bad day after my incision got infected and I was put on antibiotics, but that is not a normal occurrence.  Had I not had that little setback I would have been fine to watch my 20 month old on my own within a few days.

I was pretty good within a couple of days after coming home.  My mom was there to help with my then 5 yo which was much appreciated.  I did finally tell her to go home on the third day.  I didn't start replacement meds directly afterwards.  It was a couple of days b4 I started, so a bit of brain fog was an issue.  If you drive a lot, I'd have someone do that for you for about a week.  My Cytomel replacement was too low and I had a hard time driving until they upped it.  But also to consider, I only have one child and a very "managable" one at that.  I'm not sure how able I'd have been if I had multiple kids to look after.
