Strange Headache with Ear Pain

by aejoy, Jul 11, 2008 10:53AM
I am having a very odd headache. It first came on 2 days ago, went away yesterday and came back today. In both instances, I felt it first thing in the morning, but it persisted through the day. The headache is on the top, right side of my head, in the crown area. It feels like it is on top of my head, not deep within. That area of my scalp is very tender to the touch, like a bad bruise. Touching it makes the pain worse. I have also been getting brief, sharp, intermittent stabs of pain around the top of my right ear - not within the ear canal, but more in the tip of the ear that radiates back into my head. Tilting my head to the left also send a stab of pain through the tender part of my head. There is, in addition, a mild burning sensation in the area. I would almost think I had bumped or injured my head really bad (because of the bruise-like tenderness in that one area), but I can't remember doing anything like that in the last few days. I also had a mild sore throat on the right side a couple of days ago, but that seems to have gone away.

I do have a past history of migraines, sometimes with auras and even mild disorientation in a couple of instances. I never had them chronically, just a few attacks over the years. The last migraine I had was 6 months ago. This current headache feels nothing like that and has none of the accompanying symptoms I experienced with migraine, like auras, fatigue and sensitivity to light. I don't have any dizzyness or trouble functioning - it is just painful and so strange, it was starting to worry me a little. I'm not currently taking any medication, except for some Advil for the pain. I would appreciate any guidance or input, thanks!

Hi,

This type of headache could quite possibly be a  neuralgia, due to neuropathy. Neuralgias are sharp shooting pain which last for a few seconds but are followed by a dull ache. They can be triggered by head movement or even cold air.
Another possibility can be headache due to nerve compression in the cervical region.
Since you have tender scalp as well it is important to rule out dermatitis of scalp.
I would suggest you to see a doctor if these headaches persist. Take care!
