Newborns get allergic reactions?

by em_7984, Jul 11, 2008 09:40PM
Can a newborn get an allergic reaction to animals? I have a 4 day old baby girl and I would like to take her to my parent's house. They have 2 dogs and 2 cats. My husband is allergic to animals (gets sneezy itchy and blotchy). I've read that newborns don't get allergic reactions..Help me?

Hello,

Yes newborns can have allergy to pets. Allergic tendencies are inherited, though specific allergies are not. If either you or your mate is allergic to cats, for instance, your child will have a fifty percent chance of developing some sort of allergy as well, though not necessarily to cats. Allergies also take a while to develop. Newborns may not show symptoms of allergic reactions for a few months; then, suddenly, the child’s exposure level to mites, mold or dander will reach its threshold and the child will start to develop symptoms.

The best way to help treat allergies is to prevent them. Thoroughly clean and disinfect any areas the newborn will occupy, invest in proper ventilation and vacuum symptoms, and keep clothes and bedding washed regularly and protected with impermeable covers.
You never know to what allergen your new born may be allergic to. It may not be cats and dogs but some other allergen. Also prevention is better than cure. So try to prevent the allergens as far as possible.

Regards and pls do post us if you need any more information.
