Need diagnosis

by lynnsell, Jul 12, 2008 12:34PM
I am a 52 yr female.  The past 2 years my thyroid blood results have been

TSH 1.925 - 3.364 (it varies everytime tested, but has been around 3.0 past year)
Free T4 - average around 1.2  (range 0.61 - 1.76)
Free T3 - 5.3 - 5.8 (the last test was 5.4)  (range 2.30-04.2)
TPO - Neg
TGAb - Neg
TSI - 120 (range <130 - neg)

Thyroid ultrasound - 3mm hypoechoic structure with sm amount of internal echogenicity
Thyroid uptake scan - 6 hr radioiodine uptake is borderline low at 6.9%, no discrete hot or cold nodules

I have had severe insomnia, anxiety, hiar loss (50%), loss of appetite and wieght loss.

I also have high dhea - adrenal MRI showed nothing

My symptoms became worst when I went on HRT 18 months ago.

Do you think I have a thyroid problem?  Could the high Free T3 be a problem or could it be a false possitive?

I have been to 5 endocrinologist and they say that since my TSH is normal I do not have a thyroid problem.

My internist disagrees and wants to try a PTU to see if my symptoms lessen.

Your input would be appreciated.

I was told for a year I didn't have a thyroid problem because my results were in the normal range even though I felt absolutely terrible. Recently, however they have started to swing from borderline high to borderline low and the docs are waiting till it settles either hyper or hypo before they can treat. But it has taken me so long to get them to beleive me. So don't give up, you know your body best and if you think there's a problem then keep pushing for answers. Also, funnily enough, I've been in a premature menopause for 3 years, and whenever I'm on HRT I feel worse too. My Endo, therefore, stopped my HRT for a trial period without to see where I am in the meno. And 4 days later here I am climbing the walls. However, I'll be very interested to see what my TSH comes back at in a couple of weeks without HRT, that should give an idea of how HRT affects the thyroid. So I'll post the answer to give you an idea. Hope this helps.
